The Helix Bag was created through experimentation with faux leather trims as part of my BA Graduate Collection. Initially, the trims were intended to serve as adornments for my designs. However, during the experimentation process, I realized that using them to craft a bag would be an intriguing idea. Drawing inspiration from my previous projects—such as Barbara Hepworth’s woven sculptures and traditional Japanese basket-weaving techniques—I hand-crocheted each leather strip and assembled them to create a unique accessory for the collection.
For this project, I explored various methods of joining the leather strips and discovered that grommets provided a practical solution. I then used cords to tie the strips together. To reflect the concept of an unfinished woven basket, I allowed the excess leather strips to hang freely on the sides, tying the design back to the overarching theme of my graduate collection.
