My BA Graduate Collection was inspired by women warriors in antiquity, the silhouettes are inspired by the Amazons, a group of female warriors and hunters in Greek mythology. The idea of one-breasted Amazons.
For this project, I wanted to look into the traditional methods of making an armour. After conducting research, I took diagrams I’ve found to inform my knit sample designs, using a lace knitting method. After constructing my initial samples and through experimentation I’ve found that the waste yarns could be used as fringing to adorn the knits, as well as add fluidity to the design. Additionally, after looking at elbow and knee pads in traditional armour, I decided to design a knit that resembles the use of the pads, that allows mobility in the wearer. That’s where, I came up with a pleated design that stretches out to reveal colours on the inside, representing flesh through the paddings.
Overall the collection is heavily focused on the knit fabrication, aiming to re-define armour through knitwear, particularly East and Southeast Asian armour.
